What is Remark42?

Remark42 is the commenting engine behind the comments on the Automatica blog. It's an open-source, self-hosted tool rather than a third-party widget, which means we run our own instance and keep full control of the data it collects instead of handing it to an ad-supported comments network. It supports threaded discussions, markdown formatting, comment voting, and moderation, and stores everything in a single data file on our own server rather than an external database.

Signing in to comment

To leave a comment you can sign in with an existing account or comment anonymously. Anonymous comments are held for moderation before they're published, the same as everyone else's. We support signing in with Google, Microsoft, and GitHub, with Apple sign-in planned, so you can use an account you already have rather than creating a new one just to leave a comment.

Privacy

Remark42 only requests the minimum information needed to identify you from these sign-in providers, typically a username and avatar, and discards everything else immediately. Your ID and username are hashed rather than stored as plain text, and your avatar is served through our own proxy rather than fetched from the provider each time. There's no cross-site tracking, no third-party analytics, and no advertising trackers. Login sessions are handled with a secure, HTTP-only cookie.

You can ask for an export of everything we hold about your comment account, or ask for it to be deleted entirely, at any time by contacting us.
